If you’re balding, you might ask why you should shave your head as opposed to pursuing another option.
You probably already know the popular reasons: Saves time, saves money on hair stuff, makes hair loss less noticeable, etc.
But you probably want better, more emotional, less obvious reasons than that. Here they are.
Confidence
Going bald tends to reduce confidence. Shaving your head may help your improve your confidence by eliminating the daily mirror check to see how much hair you lost overnight. Plus you’re taking control of the situation rather than letting your (lack of) hair constrain you.
These days, a shaved head is perfectly acceptable in all settings and many successful men in all walks of life have had the look for decades.
Dominance
Seriously.
A 2013 academic paper by University of Pennsylvania researcher Albert Mannes titled “Shorn Scalps and Perceptions of Male Dominance” found that when people were shown two pictures of the same man – one with hair and one without – the man without hair was seen as being more confident and dominant than the same man with hair.
Interestingly, the paper also concluded that people rated the shaved-headed version of the male subjects as being slightly taller and stronger than their full-headed self when questioned on those two subjects, too.

When I first shaved my head, I realized shortly after that I didn’t necessarily like the completely shaved look. I’m not a full beard guy so that look was out. It wasn’t before long that I started growing a goatee and have kept that look since 1996.
