6 Little-Known Benefits of Shaving Your Head

When to shave your head if going bald?

There are a number of benefits of shaving your head but there are a few considerations that you should not forget when you have a bald head.

Before I forget: The best time to shave your head is after a hot shower. The water moistures the hair making it easier to shave.

And before we cover the benefits, remember that by shaving your head, you also increase the chance of a potential sunburn. The top of your head is an extremity with little meat on it and is in direct contact with the sun’s rays.

When you shave your head, don’t forget to wear sunblock and have a wide-brimmed hat handy during hot, sunny weather to avoid sunburn, sun damage and other negative benefits of overexposure.

Also consider using a moisturizer after shaving your head especially if you have dry skin or experience irritation after shaving.

Now, here are the benefits of shaving your head especially when you are already balding.

It Makes Baldness Less Noticeable

When you shave your head, it makes your hair loss less noticeable. When you let your hair grow out, it’s easier to see the bald spot(s).

Shaving your head makes your thinning hair less of a concern and also helps you look younger as balding tends to be associated with age. When you shave your head, you keep ’em guessing.

It Requires Less Stuff

No more shampoos, conditioners, gels, hairdryers, expensive haircuts or hairbrushes. Ok, you might want to keep the shampoo – I use a face wash for my whole face and head – but you may want to keep the shampoo in your arsenal of hair care products.

You already own a shaver or razor along with shaving cream. Use these same items for shaving your head.

You Save Time

I read a funny article from a self-proclaimed “beard expert” with a full head of hair (ie. he doesn’t shave his head) claiming that it takes newbies up to 15 minutes to shave their head and around 10 minutes for an “expert” (his word) to shave their head each time following.

The first time I shaved my head, it took about 5 minutes.

Since then, everytime I shave my head takes less than 5 minutes.

And I have a pretty big head. Lots of ground to cover.

And that’s all in: That’s wetting my hair, applying shaving cream and shaving.

10-15 minutes to shave your head is ridiculous and overstated. It might take you longer than a few minutes, but I doubt it.

Having said that, you’re not in a race and can take your time. And it depends how much hair you have to shave. It just won’t take you 15 minutes.

Plus, you’re also saving time on blowdrying, combing, haircuts, etc.

It Can Improve Your Confidence

One of the things that baldness does is contribute to a lack of confidence. That’s usually the reason that men hang onto what’s left of their hair with combovers. Shaving your head somewhat gets rid of the problem: You admit that your hair loss is an issue and get rid of what’s left of your hair.

Masculine and Strong

Shaving your head also tends to be seen as being virile and masculine. Especially when you consider famous, successful athletes, businessmen etc who do it. It’s a better look that trying to hang on to whatever hair you have left.

And as mentioned above, it tends to make you looker younger.

It May Help Your Career

A US research study suggests that bald men are perceived as being more powerful than their full-haired selves.

The author wrote the study after shaving his own head. He noticed people were more deferential towards him. He also noted many professions in which shaved-headed men tend to do well and are seen as being successful ie. professional sports.

It’s Cleaner

Less hair = less hair to wash and less hair to get smelly. Especially if you have oily skin and/or sweat a lot.

Bonus Benefit of Shaving Your Head

You’re more aerodynamic. I don’t have scientific proof but it feels like a real benefit. You’re certainly more sleek with a shaved head.
