Men have plenty of options but what razor gives the closest shave? Is the closest shave even offered by a razor or by an electric shaver?
Let’s take a closer look at each option including the pros and cons of each.
Electric Shaver
Pros
- Wet/dry options available for some models meaning you can shave your bare skin or you can shave with shaving cream in the shower. Your choice.
- Choose between rotating head shavers or foil head shavers. Each have benefits.
- Portable. Easy to take on a trip and you can normally bring it on a plane in your carry on.
- Newest models have features like pivoting heads, floating heads and trimmer for a closer and more comfortable shave.
- Has a lift and cut system that lifts hairs and cuts them for a closer shave that lasts longer than other shaving methods.
Cons
- Lift and cut systems can cause ingrown hairs since they cut hairs below the skin.
- Electric shavers can cause skin irritation.
- Might be difficult to use in tight spots ie. neck, jawline, under the ear.
- Not the best choice for shaving your head as it’s very time-consuming (I speak from experience).
Disposable Razor
Pros
- Offers a close shave when used properly.
- Fairly quick to use even when you add the time to apply shaving cream.
- A good choice for shaving your face and head. It’s versatile.
- Razors and shaving creams are easy to find.
Cons
- Costly over time as you have to replace razor blades and buy shaving cream.
- You can cut and nick your skin since the razor directly touches your skin.
- Ingrown hairs can occur especially from 2+ blade razors that lift and cut hairs.
Double Edge Razor
Pros
- It has a single blade (double edged) so less chance of skin irritation that multi-blade razors often cause.
- Double edge means both sides of the blade can be used (lasts longer) but you use only one edge at a time!
- It cuts hair at skin level for a close shave but reduces if not eliminates the chances of ingrown hairs.
- Razor blade replacements are generally cheap. The technology has been around for 100+ years so all old patents are long since expired ie. they can be easily and cheaply produced.
Cons
- Requires a razor handle which costs money, more than a typical disposable razor handle costs.
- Needs some skill, moreso than a disposable razor, as you have to hold the blade at a 30 degree angle.
Straight Razor
Pros
- Offers a very close shave.
- A cheap option when you think that you don’t replace the blade as often as disposable razor blades.
Cons
- Takes the most time to use and master. You need to shave slowly and prep skin in advance.
- Requires the most skill of the above-mentioned options.
- Less availability than electric shavers, DE razors and disposable razors.
Conclusion: What Razor Gives The Closest Shave
- The main options for shaving are electric shaver, disposable/cartridge razors, DE razor and straight razor.
- Electric shavers are fairly versatile and cost effective over time.
- Disposable razors are easy to find and use but need to be replaced regularly.
- A Double Edge razor cuts hair at skin level reducing the chance of ingrown hairs.
- A straight razor is the least common option these days and requires the most skill to use.
