You can read my Classic Wilkinson Double Edge razor review where I describe my initial experiences with a DE razor blade which I’d never used before. Now that I’ve used the blade probably 15 times, I think I have enough experience with it to say that moving forward, I will only use it to shave my head.
Last week, I decided to try shaving my head for the first time with the DE razor. I had only shaved my face previously with – as the above link shows – varying results. While I’ve had several occasions to shave my face where I had little difficulty and no cuts, I have had other occasions where I used the DE razor on my face and ended up cutting myself numerous times (7 times in one shave is my personal record…), getting red painful and irritated skin, and razor burn. Which I never get when using even cheap disposables.
I adjusted my shaving style, watched a few more videos to see how to properly use a DE razor but still couldn’t get it to the point where I’m really comfortable using it on my face like a disposable. I don’t see the point in irritating and cutting my face when I can shave less painfully with a disposable.
So I decided to try shaving my head in front of the mirror with the DE razor and see how it went. Surprisingly it went really well. While I did cut myself twice on the back of my head, it was otherwise very easy to do. I feel more confident shaving my head with the DE razor than I do my face. While I did cut myself twice I didn’t get the associated skin irritation or razor burn.
I do like using the DE razor and I am interested to see if there are benefits against ingrown hairs which admittedly I do something get when shaving my head with a disposable. But currently I don’t see the point in using the DE razor on my face with the results I was getting. In that regard, I’ll stick to shaving my head with the double edge razor blade.
